California reports more than 53,000 new cases. According to the Department of Public Health, it is "significantly higher than the prior few days in part due to the implementation of an auto-processing feature." The true comparable number is about 39,000 -- still high.

The modelers at the University of Washington's IMHE have lowered their US mortality estimate by 36,000 (through Q1-2021). They see cases and hospitalizations rolling over in the beleaguered Midwest, and they are surprised by the rapid availability of Pzifer's vaccine.

The virus continues to confuse and confound. Look at our charts of neighbors France and Germany. Why have new cases collapsed in France, but made new highs in Germany? Are their populations or policies or positions all that different?

US fatalities make new highs, but cases don't. This is the inevitable result of the time lag between infections, which increased sharply over the prior weeks, and death. Fatalities are a more certain indicator of the presence of the virus in a population, but cases -- while less reliable -- are at least a leading indicator, not a lagging one.

Another decent day, at least by the standards of the winter wave. Cases down in every continent. Many improving trends in cases and test-positivity rates in individual US states -- there were none three weeks ago.
