Covid-2019

The world's most protected, masked, vaxxed and treated man has just tested positive for Covid after he tested negative. You know who we mean. And you'll see in "Recommended Reading" that after more than two years of making us worry about every aspect of the pandemic, we're not supposed to worry about this. "That was a known risk."

In "Recommended Reading," the New York Times sure doesn't know what a recession is. But it has declared Monkeypox a total emergency, now with a complete daily section devoted to it. And now that their ace panic-monger Apoorva Mandavilli has exhausted her resources in exaggerating the threat of Covid, she's been reassigned to this new public health emergency.

This is amazing. New confirmed cases rise to yet another high in Japan, alone among nations to experience such a surge now. We suppose it would be rude to point out that Japan's is almost the most vaccinated population in the world, with 82% having at least a double dose.

Our best leading indicator for US cases is looking good. From near-zero a couple weeks ago, now 23 states are in declining two-week trends for test-positivity.

In "Recommended Reading," a deceptive headline from the left-leaning "investigative journalism" outfit Pro Publica: "How Polio Crept Back Into the U.S."  Never mind how. Did it "creep back" in the first place? Well, this story cites one case. One.

In "Recommended Reading," here is a new one. Normally Biden is one public figure who is never accused of "white supremacy," but now a Yale Med School prof is doing just that because the president is working while recovering from Covid. Go figure.

Today in "Recommended Reading," we mourn the death of Matt King, co-founder of the Meow Wolf immersive art experience, which we had the privilege of enjoying for the first time just two weeks ago. It wasn't Covid, apparently it was by his own hand -- the tragic death is one of too many suicides in the pandemic era.

In "Recommended Reading," the statement of WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on his declaration that Monkeypox is a "medical emergency" -- overruling his own committee of experts. Mark our words -- next comes the call for vaccine mandates. Bear in mind as you consider this high-handed action that he is not even a doctor (but he is a member of Ethiopia's Tigray People's Liberation Front).

We've definitely been in a new wave of Covid cases worldwide, based on the new BA.5 Omicron sub-variant (we now track the BA.5 share for US states in the larger charts). But nowhere in the world is the case-wave surging to new historic highs -- except Japan. So far, as a share of population, Japan's caseload has been among the world's lightest. Now, it seems, it is Japan's turn to experience what everyone else already has. And yet the authorities are saying they will do nothing new to limit business activity. Two years after costly and worthless global lockdowns, Japan -- unlike China -- is showing it can learn from experience.

Well at least now we have something positive to say about Biden.
