Covid-2019

It's official. Biden missed his 4th of July goal for 70% of the US adult population vaccinated, by 2.9%. How does the media cover it -- or rather, cover it up? Subtly shift the blame, as in this headline from NPR: "As COVID Vaccinations Slow, Parts Of The U.S. Remain Far Behind 70% Goal". Our view? Forget the politics of division. It should be a great and unifying source of global pride that vaccines have been developed and distributed so quickly. It's how the world won World War V.

It's two worlds, now -- the vaccinated and the unvaccinated, with spread on the rise only in Africa and South America. Variants aren't a problem for the vaccinated world. Now Johnson & Johnson makes it unanimous, finding that its vaccine is effective against them.

We're getting an increasing number of client queries about the threat from the Delta variant. Of course it's an unknown -- but no evidence that it is really faster-spreading or more deadly, or that it evades most vaccines. In the meantime, check "Recommended Reading" for the headline from the Washington Post that says it all: "It’s not the heat. It’s the existential dread."

In "Recommended Reading," even the New York Times' most fear-mongering reporter can't help report the results of a study showing that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines produce lasting immunity. On top of new evidence that they also are effective against the Delta variant, we have some very good news.

Two news stories published on the very same day, based on reporter interviews with workers and employers in Missouri. The Wall Street Journal concludes "Americans Are Leaving Unemployment Rolls More Quickly in States Cutting Off Benefits." The New York Times concludes "Where Jobless Benefits Were Cut, Jobs Are Still Hard to Fill." It's two! Two! Two realities in one!

According to official Chinese statistics, only one person has died from Covid-19 in 57 days. No, wait. They revised that away yesterday. Nobody at all has died in China from Covid-19 in 57 days.

London's senior health official who directed the UK's disastrous pandemic response has resigned in light of photos of him in a "steamy embrace with one of his senior aides." Apparently nobody is going to talk about the #METOO aspect of this workplace groping -- nope, he's gone because he violated social distancing guidelines.

Advice from a friend: "In looking at the days-to-double fatalities curves on page 9, you could just sum all these up in two graphs. Number one titled: Jurisdictions that lie about their deaths. Number two titled: All other jurisdictions."
