Covid-2019

In "Recommended Reading," the great thing about a totalitarian dictatorship is that it can corrupt language to change reality to whatever is politically desired. Now, in China, they have decided that Omicron isn't just a variant on Covid, it's a whole new thing. So the regime can declare victory on "Zero Covid" since Covid isn't a thing anymore. Hey, then never promised "Zero Omicron," now did they? And the clocks are striking thirteen.

In "Recommended Reading," a shocking report in the British Medical Journal: "...students at North American universities with third-dose COVID-19 vaccine mandates risk disenrolment if unvaccinated... To prevent one COVID-19 hospitalisation over a 6-month period, we estimate that 31,207 to 42,836 young adults aged 18–29 years must receive a third mRNA vaccine. Booster mandates in young adults are expected to cause a net harm: per COVID-19 hospitalisation prevented, we anticipate at least 18.5 serious adverse events from mRNA vaccines, including 1.5–4.6 booster-associated myopericarditis cases in males (typically requiring hospitalisation)." Is there anyone dumb enough to think that's a good trade-off? Yes -- only people who run American universities.

It's low-level, but in the US we've definitely entered at least a new winter wavelet of infections. Only 13 states have a declining two-week trajectory of new cases. The prevalence of home testing that goes unreported muddies the numbers, but the trend is still probably representative. Meanwhile, Chinese cases fall as the regime decides to test less (we told you so...).

It's like we said. China is loosening "Zero Covid" lockdown restrictions in the face of protests by claiming that it has Covid under control. But official statistics still report record case loads. They need to coordinate the propaganda better.

Vaccine uptake continues to be round-to-zero. Nobody wants the new multivalent boosters. Nobody wants to vax kids. The mania is over.

In "Recommended Reading," China continues to loosen "Zero Covid" restrictions even as cases persist at all-time highs. Meanwhile in the US, higher numbers of reported non-Covid respiratory infections are stoking the old tropes about "the health care system getting overwhelmed." Will it never end?

The great mystery of the Covid cycle continues -- the US continues to show almost exactly 500 deaths every day. Today happens to be an anomalous low at 368. But the average has been 500 for many months, with a tiny standard deviation, and that isn't really changing. Is this the dial-tone for Covid? The permanent normal?

In "Recommended Reading," our friends at the Wall Street Journal editorial page remind us that China isn't the only place where there have been lockdown protests -- there's Canada, too. And now President For Life Trudeau is very unapologetic about his crackdowns against the protesters. Over at the New York Times, a headline wishes "Happy Birthday" to Omicron.

Xi Jinping is a TrendMacro client, and he always relies on our strategic view. Another among a countless number of examples: after yesterday's TrendMacro report insisting that lockdowns won't help China contain the spread of Covid, he completely opened up the city of Guangzhou. It's all in "Recommended Reading," except for the part about TrendMacro.

In "Recommended Reading," monkeypox is now officially a deadname. It's now mpox. According to the World Health Organization, monkeypox was racist. And mpox is easier to pronounce. Funny, we never had a problem pronouncing monkeypox. But the "mp" letter combination at the beginning of an English language world is utterly unprecedented, and unpronounceable. You have to know beforehand to pronounce the letter "m" as a syllable, the name of the letter, "em." Rodentpox-70, Human mediumpox, Bonopox and MOVID-22 were all considered. "Bonopox"? Celebrity branding? Not a good idea.
