Covid-2019

Covid-2019

You think Covid can't move the market anymore? Think again. The lethal cocktail of China's rising caseload, the Communist Party's "Zero Covid" policies and increasingly daring public policies are roiling prices from oil to Apple.

In Xinjiang, an apartment fire killed 10 (including 3 children) because firefighters were held back by Covid restrictions. In September, a bus in the same region crashed on the way to a quarantine center killing 27. That's a total of 37 dead -- the number of people who died of Covid nationwide in China over the last 144 days. Seems like the treatment is worse than the disease -- and it's triggering protests with citizens screaming for Premier Xi to "step down." All the tragic details are in "Recommended Reading."

A great wall of shame in "Recommended Reading." A week ago the New York Times went all goo-goo eyes celebrating how "Officials in central China have tapped the government’s vast network of party members, civil servants and military veterans to help Foxconn" (the mega-factory in Zhengzhou where all the iPhones are made). Now a week later, more objective media around the world are reporting (and showing damning videos) of police beating workers bloody if they don't comply with Covid restrictions (that's right, these workers actually want to work). New recruits are so scared, Apple now has to pay a bonus to make them stay. But to America's Newspaper of Record, this is a workers' paradise.

With new Covid cases in China making new all-time highs daily, our friends at the Wall Street Journal editorial page wisely note: "Remember when China’s handling of Covid-19 was supposed to be a global model? Western public-health sages looked fondly on Beijing’s zero-Covid policy as an alternative to America’s messy democratic decision to live with the virus after the disastrous initial lockdowns. Well, so much for that." It's linked in "Recommended Reading."

We give thanks that the Covid emergency has receded to the point where we don't particularly have to think about it as our families and friends gather this year on this great day. Meanwhile, in China, daily new cases are making new all-time highs -- and a decision will have to be made whether or not to learn from the lockdown mistakes the world has made over the last two and a half years.

In "Recommended Reading," Fauci leaves the stage with a final plea to all of us to get vaccinated. Preferably the Moderna shot. He needs the money for his retirement.

Here's a milestone, but not a trustworthy one. Today China extended its "days to double mortalities" to 1,000 -- showing the slowest trajectory of Covid spread in the world. What's odd is that it's coming at a time when China's daily new cases are at an all-time high. That's because this metric relies on deaths (that is, reported deaths) which are still nearly nonexistent in China.

Please see "Recommended Reading" and "Meme of the day" today. We've got links to, and a cheat-sheet on, the World Health Organization's draft treaty on handling the pandemics of the future. You have one guess as to the essence of it -- yes, the treaty puts the WHO in charge, over nations, over hospitals, over doctors, and (not that anyone thinks about this anymore) over citizens.

China reports its first Covid death in 32 days. Meanwhile, the US reports 390. That's a rare exception to the usual day, in which US deaths seem pinned to about 500 for many months.

How embarrassing. The White House retweeted a link to a Lancet Preprint -- a metastudy, not a study -- that it purports shows the great effectiveness of vaccines in children. Obviously hoping nobody actually reads it, because it says "In 5-11-year-old children mRNA-vaccines are moderately effective against infections with the Omicron variant, but probably still protect well against COVID-19 hospitalisations."  Moderately? Probably? Not exactly what you want to see to justify the White House's draconian mandates as they drag the pandemic crisis on an on. It's in "Recommended Reading."
