In "Recommended Reading" today, welcome to Crazy Town. The FDA has now officially approved Pfizer booster shots for people over 65. But Project Veritas has candid-camera videos of government officials saying things about the vaccine that are, well, rather unkind. And the Chinese lab-leak thing just won't go away...

US daily vaccinations back down to only 549,000, half the rate of a couple weeks ago. It would appear the some strings don't like to be pushed on.

In "Recommended Reading," a sampler of Covid-culture from Left and Right, with two helpful DYI stories. From the Wall Street Journal, "Covid-19 Made Me More Productive." From the New York Times, "How to Vaccinate a Siberian Reindeer Herder."

In the US, new case growth is stalling out at a high level, but a level well below the "dark winter" wave of last year. "About to roll over," probably. But too soon to say "rolling over." On the other hand, hospitalizations and ICU occupancy are definitively rolling over.

Been a while since we reviewed the actual facts of the ethnic distribution of Covid's impact. Despite the constant overheated political claims that it hits disadvantaged populations hardest, here's the truth: no reported ethnic group experiences fatalities significantly out of line with their proportion of population. The most out-of-whack group is Asians, who experience fatalities 2.1% less, proportionately. African Americans, 1.4% more. In the collection of statistics across a nation of over 300 million persons, this is rounding error. See page 5 of today's report for more!

You wonder why there is a credibility problem with our public health officials? In "Recommended Reading" -- even the cheerleaders at the New York Times don't know how to position the FDA's decision on booster shots. At first, in their online live coverage, the story was that the FDA panel "overwhelmingly rejected recommended Pfizer booster shots for most recipients." But then the paper-edition editors spun it into this first-page story with most of the same text, but a very different headline: "F.D.A. Advisory Panel Recommends Pfizer Boosters for Older People and Others at High Risk."

In "Recommended Reading," another study from Israel about the efficacy of vaccine boosters. Seems that they are shown to be helpful, not perfect, and only in the short-run. That doesn't stop the New York Times from gleefully reporting on it (call us cynical, but we suspect that's not because they want good news on treatments, but because it fits the politicized narrative they have staked their credibility on).

Another little milestone -- US adult immunity, from vaccinations and prior infection, now at 81%.

The science is caving in on politics. In "Recommended Reading," a paper in no less authoritative a source than The Lancet questioning the need for universal vaccine boosters.

Aha! Now we know the Covid data reported out of China is honest and accurate. After 50 suspiciously perfect days of zero fatalities, one is being reported today. But the media is even less honest -- brace yourself for that single fatality to be the launchpad for a thousand media stories about "a new surge of deaths at a rate that deeply concerned experts don't even know how to calculate."
