A TrendMacro conversation and technology demonstration with Justin Peden
Meet the 20-year old student leading the Open Source Intelligence community's tracking of the war in Ukraine
Update to Strategic View
Justin Peden and other members of the Open Source Intelligence community use publicly available no-cost and low-cost data and analysis tools to surveille and report on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Tools include satellite feeds from private and public sources that use natural-light photography, night luminance detection and infrared heat sensing to detect massing of men and equipment and active fighting, shelling and bombing. This confirms, despite Russian denials, that Ukrainian civilian populations and facilities are being heavily targeted. The OSINT community uses collaborative mapping tools to pinpoint the exact locations of attacks to highlight personnel, infrastructure and environmental risks. OSINT members use social media, especially those not banned in Russia, to assemble intelligence inadvertently revealed by Russian soldiers, and to broadcast back the tragic truth about the large number of troop fatalities that is concealed by Russian authorities.
