Replay of TrendMacro Zoom call with California gubernatorial candidate Michael Shellenberger
A radically sensible agenda for clean nuclear power and shutting down open-air drug markets.
Update to Strategic View
Environmental advocate Shellenberger is running for governor of California in 2022 as an independent. California’s “open primary” system means he only has to come in second in a crowded field, and he can then face Newsom head-to-head in November. Shellenberger’s key policy initiative is CalPsych, a new state-wide agency that would economically replace the expensive and failing patchwork of county-administered approaches. Like similar successful initiatives in Europe, CalPsych would treat homelessness as an addiction problem, not a housing problem. Shellenberger has long been an advocate of nuclear power as the only practical green power-generating alternative. The present energy crisis creates a window in which next-generation nuclear can be seen with fresh eyes as a safer, cleaner and more reliable technology than wind or solar.
